Dubtribe Sound System – Live at We Are Family

Recorded live at the Cabaret Metro in 1996. This was one of Luis Baro’s unforgettable events in Chicago. This recording was distributed widely on cassette and was so popular in the mid 90′s that people began to assume that Dubtribe was correctly spelled “Dub-Tribe” (which is wrong.) We began getting very defensive about out name and how to spell it… “We are not a Tribe of Dub (what the hell is that anyway?) We are Dubtribe. But that didn’t stop the confusion. This recording is one long set from an epic night in a great venue.

Recorded live in Halifax, Novascotia in 1997. This event was well anticipated, and we nearly didn’t make it. After a set in Montreal, and Quebec City, the mighty Nick Oliver grabbed the wheel of the Ashram and drove us straight to Halifax while everyone slept. The sun came up and went down again, and we finally arrived just in time to set up and play mid-party. When we were done we packed up and drove directly back to Montreal for Ambient night. A heroic effort, and an unforgettable night. This set is split into two sections.

Dubtribe Sound System – Live at Great Adventure

Recorded live at Scotto’s triumphant “A Day In The Park” event in 1997. Dubtribe shared the stage with Frankie Bones and many other NYC ravers. The film ‘Synthetic Pleasures’ was filming and took much of it’s crowd footage from during Dubtribe’s set. This set was unique because it was Dubtribe’s debut performing in an amphitheater and at one point they had nearly every single person in attendance with their fist in the air cheering for unity and the roots of house music as independent american art. Unlike most of the live recordings, this set is cut into tracks, and so you can easily flip between songs.

At the time I had no idea what it was, and I had never heard any of these songs before. A street corner bootleg that turned out to be completely life changing. Versions – Dubtribe Sound System

This is the lost album. I suppose everyone has a “lost album” but this one was literally lost. The songs on Versions came from the live sets performed between 1993 and 1994. These were originally huge, warehouse style tracks. The tour was booked, the album was nearly done, and Organico was set to release the album. A simple hard drive mistake wipe a year’s work away in about 2 seconds. The album was lost. Dubtribe toured without a release, and Organico never released the reworked version of Versions. This album was recorded the following winter after a very long, hard tour, and a lot of soul searching to re-find themselves. The interstitials on this album were performed by Adnan Sharif, Chadwick Justin Minor, Giancarlo Belloli, and Sunshine and Moonbeam Jones.

Dubtribe’s second full length album. This is the “ambient” album which was actually a document of the live performances done beside Cosmique Jason Walker at their monthly residency at the Come-Unity party in San Francisco. The album was originally completed almost immediately following ‘Sound System’ in 1993 – as it was also a live document rather than a “studio recording” per se – But it was not actually released on Organico until the spring of 1994. In addition to the ambient performances at home, Dubtribe began doing live improvisations at alternative nights, ambient gatherings, and chill rooms in addition to their main floor sets as the result of these experiments.

Sound System – Dubtribe

The debut album from Dubtribe. Originally released on Organic out of Chicago this album is a pure document of the first year of Dubtribe Sound System. Written in a closet, performed all across the US and Canada, Dubtribe were born in the dark, on a dance floor, and came alive in a warehouse as a purely live, completely analog live performance. In 1992 there simply were no other live bands. Some people did a “Live PA” but that always meant they were going to pantomime to a DAT tape. Dubtribe went to a lot of effort for a very long time – Not because they were purists, but because it was so much fun.

This is the album version of Sound System. The songs are presented in a semi-mixed format. It’s probably best to buy the whole thing and listen to it in order. If you’re looking for the extended play versions of the songs, we recommend picking up the 12″ Single versions as well.

Wednesday Night – Dubtribe Sound System

Originally born from a live set written for a show called “snow-e-bear” so long ago now that a name like that sounded fun at the time. The MMT-8′s had crashed again, and it was time for new music. So the theme of the set was “Who Needs The Weekend?” The songs eventually became the source material for the album “Bryant Street.” This song was an instant classic. At the actual debut, some cables were not working, Moonbeam was back behind the racks trying to fix them, and Sunshine was trying to help from the front of the rack. 5-10 minutes went by while the bass, drums and keys for Wednesday Night had been just looping. When they crawled out from under their equipment, the room was going completely crazy. Dubtribe learned something about repetition and looping that day. Completely by accident.

Sunshine did a phone interview with a Swedish magazine, and they sent the recording of the interview back to him because they couldn’t translate it properly. The tape was inspiring, and We Used To Dance was born. The Glasgow Underground Remix was well received, and the original stands as a classic.

I’ve been working day and night to encode and package up releases for the store here. I’ve introduced some Dubtribe catalog – some of which have either never before been available, or have been out of print for quite a while. I’m especially excited about the Funky Back Home single, the Rideline Single, and the Mother Earth original release, and the remixes!

I’ve worked out a way to offer up Sunday Soul archives here. The archives still need me to send you the link personally because those transmissions are huge, and I can’t keep them here. I loaded up a few recent archives as well as a couple of really interesting ones from the past too. I’ll keep at it and continue to bring the one’s that have really reached me, but if you’ve got a favorite you’re after, please let us know.

I’ve gotten a chance to load up Fall Down, Higher, and This Love from Sunshine Jones and as much as we actually really like all the releases mixed together, there seemed to be some need for clarity. So I coded in some navigation for you to be able to better find what you’re looking for. Ultimately what I’m working for here is preparations for the actual release of Sunshine Jones’ Gas Masks & Crazy Girls album. It’s been a long time coming, and I think we’ve abandoned the ideas we had of working with another label to release it. As much as Sunshine deserves broad distribution, good promotion, and vinyl for this release, it just seems like things being what they are in the world of the “record” and the “album,” that it’s actually best to just keep it here at home and give these projects the love they really deserve.

Breeze… – Dubtribe Sound System

The power of Breeze took some touring to develop. Written in the middle 90′s, Dubtribe toured this song and used is a the breaking point in the live set between the main floor house and tribal and the roaring breaks of Mother Earth at the end of the set. The sweet lulling strings, and the challenging – pre drum and bass – rhythm always seemed to confuse the dance floor. As any DJ knows mixing between 4 on the floor and breaks can be difficult, but by the time Moonbeam began her amazing build up from the breakdown to the end, she literally owned whatever room she performed in. One of the most beautiful live experiences of our lives. While Sunshine’s soul mix is immediately more accessible and stands as one of his all time favorite remixes, it lacks some of the triumph of championing something more complex in a sea of people aching to have their hearts broken.

This song was championed by François Kevorkian at Body and Soul in New York City. The words come from a man named Babo in a town called Bumba in Belize. The Rhythm is a derivative of wa wa ko. Drum master Primo Navaro and his wonderful students joined us in the hallway of the Bryant Street flat to record this beautiful song. Sunshine had been singing it for years in warehouses and club all over the world, but it was the encouragement of tracking engineer Marc Rosenberg that brought all these elements together.

Originally released as Guidance 41, Regalo De Amor is a mid set anthem from 1998. As the music for the Bryant Street album began to come together, Moonbeam sat down with Doc Martin’s girlfriend on a terrace in the Hollywood hills and translated lyrics together and spoke in Spanish about the meaning of the words, and how to best say what she was trying to express. It was a beautiful thing to witness. ‘What you feel in your heart makes you happy’ was the second track Sunshine ever produced without looping, or editing. The track is played in traditional disco dub fashion – dub first, song second, and stands as one of his favorite personal productions to date. We will probably miss Guidance Recordings forever, but we will never ever forget the magic of Rob and Ivan.

From the album ‘Versions’ and the summer tour of 1995. Funky Back Home was the last release by Dubtribe on the Organico label. Sunshine and Moonbeam toured for a year, working out new material for an album, and the entire album was lost in a hard drive crash. ‘Versions’ was reinterpreted and eventually recorded following the tour which was intended to support it. This single is the only recorded history of what that album originally sounded like.

Mother Earth was Dubtribe’s first single. It took about a year, but eventually it was playing in every warehouse and at every rave all over the world. The remixes were Dubtribe’s first opportunity to re examine themselves and follow up on the strong words, and powerful sentiment they had been eliciting and soliciting. The first three mixes were reworks done by Sunshine. The last three are a look at this track by friends and comrades who were close to home.

Upon it’s initial review MixMag, Urb, and DMC Update cried “I want my Dubtribe back!” This was largely a response to how popular the first single – Mother Earth – had been, but in time Sunshine’s Theme began to rise up the DJ charts, and slowly became an end of the night anthem that people could name in just one note. The debut single from Dubtribe. Featuring the classic Mother Earth (or, “I want my planet back”) along with Mother Earth Remix, and Memory. Mother earth was an anthem, DSS would often perform this cut for 30-45 minutes at the end of their live sets. Memory is a live recording from the chill out room of San Francisco’s seminal Come Unity party where Dubtribe held a residency and performed live down tempo music with mixed media and treatments. This single launched Dubtribe Sound System’s recording career, rising up into the UK dance charts. It was another time, and another life time.

Dubtribe’s fifth full length album release. This 2003 album contains the single “Do It Now” which is by far Dubtribe’s most successful single. Baggage is a very personal album, the first time Sunshine and Moonbeam ever really paused to consider themselves, their relationship, and how they may have arrived in this moment now. Definitely an album worth listening to more than once, and letting it happen inside of you.

This is the album version of Baggage. The songs are presented in a semi-mixed format. It’s probably best to buy the whole thing and listen to it in order. If you’re looking for the extended play versions of the songs, we recommend picking up the 12″ Single versions as well.

Bryant Street – Dubtribe Sound System

Dubtribe’s Fourth full length album release. The 1999 album which summarized the period between 1995 and 2001 for Dubtribe Sound System. This album was largely written on tour, and performed to millions of people. Then, for the first time since they began, Sunshine and Moonbeam went into the studio and closed the door. Previous albums had been recorded as live performances, and Bryant Street marks the debut of traditional studio work for Dubtribe. Many people collaborated to create this recording, and to cooperate in the tours which followed to support it. It was a long time coming, and a true labor of love.

This is the album version of Bryant Street. The songs are presented in a semi-mixed format. It’s probably best to buy the whole thing and listen to it in order. If you’re looking for the extended play versions of the songs, we recommend picking up the 12″ Single versions as well.

There may be minimums involved, but that will be determined title by title. The plan is to release vinyl first and once we have determined the life of the record is done, then we will release the digital formats for downloading.

In some instances — like 24 Hours — we took the saddest possible song and plugged in machines, used our own compressed air as percussion and created Italo madness. In others — Love Will Tear Us Apart — we re-syncopated the track for mixing, but did little else. The attempt was to introduce Joy Division to the modern dance floor and forget ourselves.

As of this afternoon Treehouse Muzique has gone live in beta form. We’ve spent the last week or so learning, coding, and working very hard to install, design, and test this new code. Everything is not up yet, but we felt it might be more important to get back up and running while we work out the details, and post up all the products.

Essentially what we’ve done is abandoned the antique formats we were holding on to. So gone is the message board, gone is the blog style essay format, and gone is the cryptic-but-beautiful navigation and the old idea that if you really care, well then you’ll take the time to figure it out. Instead we’ve undertaken a new mantra – function=form.

We wil be working around the clock to load up the new digital releases, the dubtribe and imperial dub catalogs, our used vinyl collection, launch new vinyl releases, cross reference all the releases which we have been participating in, and more… Enjoy!
